Duterte and AfDB sign loan agreement for railway project

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte and representatives of the Asian Development Bank signed the loan agreement for the Southern Commuter Railway project on Thursday at a ceremony in Malacañang.

The AfDB earlier announced that it has approved up to $4.3 billion (approximately 227.7 billion pesos) to help finance the construction of the 54.6 kilometer railway project which will be part of the railway system North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) and will link Metro Manila and Laguna.

According to Malacañang, the project is expected to have 18 stations crossing 10 cities including Manila, Makati, Taguig, Parañaque and Muntinlupa in the NCR.

Stops also include San Pedro, Santa Rosa, Cabuyao and Calamba in Laguna.

When completed, the rail system will cut travel time between Manila and Calamba City from 2.5 hours to just one hour, officials said.
