Harassment by lending app operators drives man to suicide
A private employee ended his life by consuming pesticides on Saturday at Mamidipally of Dandepally mandal in Mancherial district, nearly 250 km from here, allegedly because of harassment from loan app operators.
The victim who was in his thirties, Bommadi Rajendra Prasad, worked in a lifestyle e-commerce arm of a private company. He consumed pesticides two days ago at his home in Mamidipally. His wife Varalaxmi, an Anganwadi teacher, rushed him to a hospital in Mancherial.
As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to a private hospital in Karimnagar, 100 km from their village. “Prasad died on Saturday while undergoing treatment,” Dandepally SI Mr Sambamurthy said.
Mancherial DCP Akhil Mahajan IPS said that the victim got loan amounts from different private loan application companies ranging from ₹7,000 to ₹10,000. The total sum he borrowed was around ₹50,000 from CashSamosa, CashBean, HelloRupee, YahaRupee, EZCredit and DaisyCash companies.
He got these loans from March to August. However, he reportedly received phone calls from loan app operators stating that he owed them a total sum of nearly ₹7 lakh.
A case under Section 306 (encouraging suicide) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66 of the Computers Act has been filed against the lending app operators.
The IS said the victim prepared an SMS about how the loan app operators harassed him demanding ₹7 lakh for loan amount of ₹50,000.
Police are verifying reports that lending app operators sent him objectionable photos threatening to harass him into making those photos public.
This is the second suicidal death due to harassment by lending app operators in the district. On May 19, a married woman, Bollu Kalyani, 30, resorted to the extreme gait by hanging from the rod in the ceiling of her bathroom in Mancherial. No arrests have been made in this case so far.
